The amount of time people spend scrolling through social media feeds is ever-increasing. I am guilty of this myself and must often remind myself that my time on social media needs to be more intentional. And is it just me or does it seem like everybody and their mother, cousin and auntie is a ‘beauty guru or wellness expert’ nowadays?
You do not have to look far to find a new celebrity or influencer talking about skincare, wellness, and beauty tips. In some instances, if you allow it, it can be frustrating and cringeworthy. For example, I recently watched Jada Pinkett Smith’s nine-minute IGTV on her skincare routine and it irked me so badly! Albeit beautiful with influence, she really ought to refrain from giving skincare tips like this. All I could think about is how many people will follow her routine of over-steaming and over-exfoliating their skin to try to achieve what she claims is the result.
But instead, I think it is worth feeling empowered and saying DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE to your following! Use this kind of information as fuel to create. For many spa professionals, the pandemic was the catalyst to get more active on their social media platforms, but it can often it can feel like a daunting task. So, use all of the information that is trending by these celebrities and influencers as a launchpad to create some killer content. Get out in front of your audience and remind them why you are the true expert and trusted resource for them. Help debunk the myths and clarify the misinformation that is often carelessly spewed from trending celebrity and influencers posts. Instead of getting discouraged, let the popularity of their posts be a proof of the concept, inspiring a topic and following the buzz to provide accurate information to your audience. In other words, instead of feeling overwhelmed or defeated, get hyped to use this as fuel!
